The E-book at School: New Educational Paths
Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 by Paolo SemenzatoThe arrival of the E-book device in the publishing world will enable plenty of books to be contained in a light and easy device that, thanks to the E-ink technology, provides a readability similar to a paper book. With its highlighting and adding-note features, the E-book reader appears as the right “instrument” for the Classroom.
What are the advantages of using an E-book Reader at School?
First of all, it is a matter of “knowledge weight”! In fact all the “books” are digitally loaded into the reader avoiding in this way an overload of students shoulders…
Secondly, it is a matter of saving money thanks to the absence of paper book printing and distribution.
In addition to Technological and Economical aspects, the E-book can enable innovative education and learning Methodology.
Thanks to the huge amount of knowledge “packed” into the reader, the teacher can define multidisciplinary and personalized programs and education paths. How?
At the beginning the selected books, once downloaded from the Publishing House, are stored into the teacher’s reader; during the course more books and notes can be added allowing the teacher to easily select and quickly organize the relevant information: as a matter of fact this process can be seen as the creation of a ”new book” that can be delivered to the students readers. The educational path can be adapted to match single student needs; for instance by providing extra material on a specific topic to some students.
What I just mentioned relate to educational paths; but others areas of application could be of interest.
Do you foresee any other valuable didactical application?
How can the E-book be used for study at home?
Can multichannel overcome current E-book limitation, e.g. not full-motion B&W displays, through joint usage of E-book with PC and IPTV?
With this post I hope to involve both students and teachers and together look into this new, fascinating and promising area.
